Doing More, Doing Better — Awareness & Action for Racial Equality
If you’re like me — literally — a middle-aged white guy running a business or managing a team, this post is for you.
You have a platform, whether you accept that or not. Whether it’s just you or a team of 100. Whether you have one customer or 1000, you can help to bring change.
Over the past two weeks, I’ve spent time assessing the environments & circumstances in which I’ve lived my entire life, from elementary school & middle school in South Jersey, to college & my working years.
It’s now obvious how much structural & societal bias in which I’ve been immersed — starting with ethnic jokes at family gatherings, “us vs them” playground groups in elementary school, to hallway tensions in middle school, to living in a homogeneous white culture since high school and throughout my career.
I absolutely don’t have any answers — I’m still learning what questions to ask. But starting with awareness and taking the smallest steps are a way forward.
I shared more detail about my own assessment & actions in yesterday’s post.
